We recently had the chance to chat with Hazel Brady, the Vice Principal for Learning and Attainment at West Lothian College, who completed our Executive Leadership Series. In our discussion, she shared her motivations, the essential skills and knowledge she gained, and how the program has significantly influenced her leadership style and career path. Read more below.
What motivated you to join our Executive Leadership Programme?
My learning experience at CDN has always been really positive, so when I saw the Executive Leadership Programme, I knew that this was the right course for me. As a Faculty Director, I wanted to enhance the skills I learned when I did the Strategic Management and Leadership course, developing my leadership style further. I know first-hand the profound impact that a leader can have on teams, on individuals and on organisations, so I wanted a course which would allow me to gain a fresh perspective and learn innovative approaches.
What were the most valuable skills or insights you gained?
The most valuable skills learned was self-reflection, effective communication, strategic thinking and how to navigate through a period of constant change. I gained so much from this course and it exceeded all expectations. This was down to the brilliant course design by Valerie Jackman and also being lucky enough to meet a great group of leaders, who will continue to be part of my journey going forward, they are a fantastic network of support.
You cannot under-estimate the power of networking because this gives you a support network where you can seek advice, share experiences, collaborate, gain valuable insights and encouragement.
How has the programme impacted your leadership style and abilities?
This programme is so versatile and has allowed me to increase my leadership toolkit which I feel more confident to use when required. I am a more empathetic and bring my very best to my team, enhancing my effectiveness as a leader. Reflection is key, allowing me to think differently and adapt, which is particularly pertinent to the college sector, where change is persistent.
Can you provide examples of how you have applied these skills in your role?
I have focussed on building relationships, improving communication and understanding that strategic planning requires more than turning a plan into action. I have adopted techniques where you bring your teams together to build confidence, allowing a shared vision and a shared sense of purpose to be agreed.
Applying techniques such as questioning and reflection is not always easy but this course has given me the confidence to do it more frequently. This can help you to gauge your strengths and weaknesses, address deficits and optimise your full portfolio of leadership skills.
Has your participation in the programme brought any noticeable benefits to your career journey, and/or organisation?
An opportunity arose in April to apply for a promoted post and this course gave me the confidence to put myself forward. I was delighted to be successful in the recruitment process and started my new role as Vice Principal at West Lothian College in June. I am very grateful to have established a fantastic network, learning from great leaders within the college sector and I am confident that I have improved my leadership skills which are essential for my new role.
How would you summarise your experience in a few sentences?
I highly recommend this course, it really does make a difference, professionally and personally. I love that the journey did not end when the course ended as our group continues to meet regularly which is invaluable. I am more confident and feel more equipped to make a difference going forward end enjoy sharing many of the techniques with my colleagues.
What advice would you give to future participants of the Executive Leadership Programme?
My advice is that you protect the time when you attend the course so that you can fully embrace it and be present. The variety of speakers and presenters will keep you engaged and motivated, wanting to go back for more, so relax and enjoy every minute. Take time to reflect each time that you attend and take plenty of notes because you will definitely want to refer to them. Valerie is a brilliant course leader and her creative approach to the design of this course is thoughtful and impactful. Don’t under-estimate how rewarding it is to learn new skills and the role you play as a leader, by committing to this professional development, you will be in a great position to support and develop your current and future teams.
