The research, based on surveys and focus groups with Governance Professionals, reveals that while recruitment can be challenging, retention is less of a concern. On average, colleges have around three board vacancies, a figure that has remained consistent in recent years. This highlights the ongoing need for dedicated individuals to contribute their skills and experience to these vital roles.
Word-of-mouth and LinkedIn are identified as the most effective recruitment channels, while traditional press adverts tend to attract less suitable applicants. It’s clear that targeted recruitment strategies are crucial. The report emphasizes the importance of a well-crafted recruitment pack that balances information about the role’s responsibilities with the benefits of board membership.
Specific skill sets, especially in finance and accounting, are in high demand. Attracting a diverse range of applicants also remains a key challenge. Colleges are exploring innovative approaches like “meet the board” sessions and informal discussions with potential candidates to make the opportunity more appealing.
While board member turnover is expected, certain factors can negatively impact the board member experience and contribute to early departures. These include an overemphasis on governance issues at the expense of student matters, lengthy meetings, and a decline in the informal aspects of board membership that foster camaraderie and a sense of shared purpose.
The report highlights the importance of cultivating a positive board culture where members feel valued and see their contributions making a difference. Open communication, effective teamwork, and a focus on the student experience are key elements of successful retention.
The CDN research offers several practical recommendations for both recruitment and retention.
These include:
Recruitment:
- Utilise diverse recruitment methods, including Public Appointments Scotland.
- Invest sufficient time and resources in the recruitment process.
- Plan ahead and be prepared to re-advertise if necessary.
- Leverage the CDN Recruitment Bank.
Retention:
- Review meeting formats and schedules to ensure they are efficient and engaging.
- Strike a balance between governance processes and the core work of the board.
- Conduct informal exit interviews to gain valuable feedback from departing members.
By understanding the current trends and challenges in college board recruitment and retention, both individuals and institutions can work together to ensure that these vital roles are filled by skilled and committed individuals who are passionate about supporting education.
