The Changing Learner: Supporting Colleges to Rise to the Challenge with CDN’s Latest Programme

We’re excited to announce the launch of CDN’s Changing Learner Programme, designed to help colleges address the evolving challenges faced by today’s learners.

Building on the success of the Trauma-Informed College Programme, this new initiative introduces three new key pillars to foster a supportive, inclusive learning environment:

  • Promoting Positive Behaviours and Resolving Conflict
  • Culture and Community
  • Staff Wellbeing and Safeguarding

These pillars are informed by CDN’s ongoing work and insights from the newly released Changing Learner Report, which we are proud to launch alongside the programme.

CDN’s Paula Christie, Head of Delivery and Engagement, states:

“The Changing Learner Programme equips colleges with the tools needed to meet the evolving needs of learners. By focusing on trauma-informed practices, staff wellbeing, and inclusive learning, we are empowering both staff and learners to thrive in an ever-changing educational landscape.”

The Research

CDN’s Changing Learner Report explores the challenges facing learners in Scotland, based on research with Forth Valley College and Fife College. Key findings include lower academic performance, delayed skills development, increased anxiety, and reduced resilience. These issues, exacerbated by the pandemic, had started emerging prior to it. The report also highlights the impact of digital technology on social skills and attention spans.

  2. The Trauma-Informed College: Training and resources to support learners affected by trauma, including a diagnostic workshop.
  3. Culture and Community: EDI-based workshops and resources to implement inclusive policies and practices.
  4. Staff Wellbeing and Safeguarding: Workshops focused on mental health, self-care, and safeguarding.
