This course is aimed at practising or aspiring managers and leaders. The primary role of a practicing or aspiring manager and leader is to lead and manage individuals and teams to deliver aims and objectives in line with organisational strategy.

Entry requirements

Ideally applicants will have some leadership experience and carry out a management and leadership role. Applicants who have been identified by their organisation as aspiring managers and leaders are also welcomed, but they must have the support of their organisation and opportunities to apply their learning.

Course overview

The Emerging Leadership Programme is built around the CMI Level 5 RQF (level 8 SCQF) Certificate in Management and Leadership which will be awarded to participants upon successful completion of the course and the two assignments. The certificate comprises two units:

Principles of Leadership Practice (CMI 526)

Total unit time: 78 hours      Guided learning hours: 30

The aim of this unit is to develop managers’ understanding of ethical leadership and the impact of culture and values on leadership. Managers will examine leadership models and the concept of empowerment with consideration of techniques and methods for leading others.

Principles of Managing and Leading Individuals and Teams (CMI 503)

Total unit time: 50 hours      Guided learning hours 25

The aim of this unit is to equip managers with an in-depth understanding of the theoretical and practical approaches to leading and managing teams effectively. Managers will identify the techniques used to monitor and manage individual and team performance, assess current and future capabilities and adopt approaches to respond to these. On successful completion of this unit, managers will not only understand how to meet the challenge of leading individuals and teams, they will know how to support, motivate and inspire them to exceed expectations.

Course delivery

This is a blended learning programme. Participants will attend 11 x 2-hour on-line workshops interspersed with guided and self-directed learning. The workshops combine tutor input, practical activities, peer learning and reflective practice. Guided learning comes in the form of research on the participant’s organisation, reading and self-directed exploration on key topics.

Assessment

A written assessment must be completed for each unit. The graded system for CMI qualifications is ‘Pass/Refer’. If a candidate does not pass on their first attempt, they will be given developmental feedback and allowed a second and final submission.
