An international partnership to remember

Dundee and Angus College has recently completed a European funded two-year Erasmus+ project aimed at developing learning and teaching resources for dementia care for use in higher education and clinical settings.

The project, entitled Memory Media, arose from research findings that approaches which use art and multi-media are having an impact in dementia care. People with mild-to-moderate dementia can benefit from participating in cognitive stimulation activities. Currently this method is rarely taught within higher education courses so a consortium was established to address this.

This international partnership, led by D&A College, spanned the United Kingdom (D&A College and Forth Valley College), Spain, Sweden and China. The exciting collaboration promoted cross-cultural learning and created an opportunity to combine two different cultural approaches – East meets West – resulting in a holistic programme offering a wide range of resources. These include a website, research findings, teaching and learning materials, and a peer teaching course plan for health professionals, carers or relatives.

A life story application was also designed and developed by D&A College students. This Memory Media app can be used to aid those living with dementia or those caring for sufferers. It allows storage of information in relation to a person’s life story which can be shared with family and friends. To access the application, please visit www.memorymedia.org

Various other products for students, teachers and health & social care professionals were developed and are now published at www.mmdementia.com.
