Meet the Authors
Carolyn Cload
Carolyn Cload is a lecturer in Maths and Civil Engineering at University of the Highlands & Islands (Inverness College) and is involved in teaching at all stages from National 5 to degree level. She worked as a consulting engineer for many years before moving to education. She is a Chartered Engineer and holds a MEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering. She completed a TQFE through Stirling University in 2018-2019. Carolyn is interested in forming stronger links between maths taught in the classroom and the “real world” skills needed in the workplace.
Miles J Fuller
Miles J Fuller originally qualified as a Chartered Surveyor specialising in Compulsory Purchase and Compensation Law. He first started teaching for the Sports department at Inverness College UHI, whilst he was first there as Facilities Manager. Wishing to combine his interest in Sport and to increase his breadth of teaching, Miles completed an MSc In Sports Studies at the University of Stirling however, he found his niche teaching in Supported Education at Inverness College UHI. This paper is the culmination of an interest in Argentine Tango and two trips to Buenos Aires to learn how to teach Argentine Tango to students with Down Syndrome.
Daniel Kiraly
Daniel Kiraly is a Construction and Civil Engineering Lecturer at Perth College, University of the Highlands and Islands, teaching Construction Technology and Management at SCQF levels 6 through 8. His research interests include animation for learning, social constructive learning theories as well as material science and renewable technologies. Professor Peter Lavender
Professor Peter Lavender works at the University of Wolverhampton and based in the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing. He is Chair of Governors at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College. Peter is a research supervisor for the Open University’s Ed D programme.
Dr Anthony Luke MRSC
Dr Anthony Luke MRSC lectured in Chemistry at Inverness College UHI, teaching Chemistry and Science at SCQF5 (Level 5) – SCQF9 (Degree Year 3). He recognised that problem-solving and familiarity with chemical vocabulary are essential skills for students of chemistry, and explored engaging ways to help students develop these abilities. He was a workplace assessor for students taking the Foundation Apprenticeship in Scientific Technologies and was also a Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) External Verifier for Scottish Vocational Qualifications in science. Tragically, Anthony was killed in an accident in Glencoe in 2021. Dr Aileen McGuigan
Dr Aileen McGuigan is a senior lecturer at the School of Education, Social Work and Community Education, University of Dundee. Research interests include: pedagogy, learner transitions and education policy.
Nicola McIntosh
Nicola McIntosh is a PhD student in Education at the University of Stirling where her research revolves mostly around the student experience. Currently, she is writing her thesis on the lived experience of academic persistence among further education students who have considered withdrawal. She holds an MSc in Information Technology and a BA in Accounting. Prior to starting her doctorate, she taught courses in accounting, IT and academic skills in various Scottish colleges, universities and prisons. Alongside her current studies, Nicola currently works as a Learning Support Lecturer at Scotland’s Rural College
Patrick O’Donnell
Patrick O’Donnell is a lecturer in Engineering Science and Technology and the Research Coordinator at Perth College UHI. Research interests include: learner transitions; learning spaces; FE and HE education policy formation, interpretation and enactment; institutional cultural change; teacher professionalism and vocational education.
Dr Eddie Rocks
Dr Eddie Rocks has worked in HE in FE for eighteen years teaching Social Science based subjects. He teaches to Social Research Methodology and is a supervisor on the final year dissertations on a BA degree. His current research interest relates learning and transformative experiences.
Kyle Smith
Kyle Smith is a lecturer at Perth college and his research interests include: literature, cultural studies, history and education.
Dr Joanna Stevenson
Dr Joanna Stevenson is part of the Reference Services team at the National Library of Scotland. Reference Services is responsible for the delivery of General Reading Room and enquiry services; delivering user education activities; and supporting the work of Collections and Interpretation colleagues to facilitate access to the collections. Frances Ann Whittet
Frances Ann Whittet is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Health & Social Studies at Perth College UHI. Previous to lecturing Frances spent most of her career within NHS Scotland both as a nurse and for a time, as a midwife and has maintained registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse.
